Arthritis & Society for Crippled Children

our history

The Arthritis Society and the Society for Crippled Children are legacy organizations who originally affiliated with United Health Services when it was founded in 1966.

In 1953, the Arthritis Society was founded and incorporated as the St. Joseph Chapter of the Arthritis and Rheumatism Foundation. In 1973, it disaffiliated with the national organization in order to focus its activities solely in its home community.

In 1936, the Society for Crippled Children incorporated and affiliated with the Indiana Society for Crippled Children. In 1984 it, too, disaffiliated from the national organization to concentrate its efforts locally. Historically, it provided early intervention services and equipment for children with disabilities. Today it is most closely aligned with other UHS agencies and programs whose missions are similar, including the Arthritis Society, the Hearing and Speech Center and First Steps.

our services

Both these organizations focus on making life better for their constituents. They offer free durable medical equipment loan, information and referral and share in UHS’ Benefits Advocacy program.
