Race to Save Lives - November 9, 2013

The Race to Save Lives at Saint Joseph Regional Medical Center (SJRMC) in Mishawaka features a 5K, 10K and 1 mile Walk/Run that starts and finishes at SJRMC.  The Race supports the work of the Suicide Prevention Center to bring awareness and educational programs to the community
including the Yellow Ribbon Youth Suicide prevention training in High Schools, suicide intervention skills training courses, and support to survivors who have lost a loved one to suicide. And, with an alarming number of US Veterans dying by suicide in recent years---as many as 20% of military deaths are the result of suicide compared to 26% related to combat---our goal is to bring both awareness and education about this troubling trend to the forefront. Suicide is preventable and it's our hope that by raising awareness for this cause, we can help save lives!

The 5K and 10K starts at 9AM on a USATF certified course that's flat and fast! The 10K winds through the Winding Brook neighborhood circling back to SJRMC.  The timing is provided by T & H Timing with chips in the bibs.  On-line registration will be begin in August. You will also have the option to pre-register by mailing in the registration form. Early packet pickup and late registration will be available on November 8 in the Saint Joseph Regional Medical Center Lobby.  Prizes are given to the top finishers, and early registration includes a very nice race shirt!

This years 1 Mile Walk will begin shortly after 9AM and head out along a scenic stretch of Holy Cross Parkway. We encourage people to put together teams to honor someone they have lost to suicide. We'll have a "Survivors with Hope" area with information and a place to leave a message of encouragement for others or to remember a loved one.  Check back for more information!

Be sure to follow the Race on Facebook at www.facebook.com/sjcsuicideprevention.  We'll post inspirational messages and let you know about the local businesses supporting this great cause!

We are looking forward to a great event in 2013.  If you would like more information or are interested in either volunteering or sponsoring this event, please contact Tracy Schneider at 574-247-6047 ext. 120.  We could not do this event without volunteers and the support of the community!
